SUNDAY SHOWSTOPPER SNIPPET… Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Priscilla

Sunday ShowstopperIt’s SUNDAY SHOWSTOPPER SNIPPET time! Breast Cancer Awareness month continues, but, for those currently receiving treatment, and those who have completed treatment, ‘awareness’ will not just be for a month – it will be for the rest of our lives. Our mantra has became “I WILL SURVIVE!”

In 2011, Bette Midler took Australia’s successful adaptation of the 1994 cult classic movie, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” to Broadway. Although the show had it’s share of controversy (cutting corners with recorded orchestrations rather than using a live orchestra), it was well received, and rewarded for it’s over-the-top costumes with both an Olivier and a Tony, and nominations for lead actor, the hilariously talented Tony Sheldon [click on Tony’s name to see the behind-the-scenes transformation he had to undergo nightly].

PRISCILLA follows a tour through the Australian outback by a band of three drag performers on their bus, which they christened, “Priscilla.” Using hit songs from the 70’s, PRISCILLA bounces, dances, and delights everyone on and off of the stage. YES, it’s wacky and WAY over the top, but, the musical isn’t all fluff, fun and feathers. It exposes the fear and inner turmoil of it’s lead characters as they journey through the unknown on their way ‘home,’ at least for one of them.

I hope this Snippet brings hope, courage and some big smiles and laughs to the faces of those fighting to survive!
